5th Grade Activities
The following is a list of planned events and activities for our fifth grade classes. The activities are designed to be a fun and memorable way to close the children’s experience in elementary school.
We ask each family to make a $60 donation to cover the cost for these activities. To make your donation, please send a check made out to “Calahan Student Body” (writing your child’s name in the memo line) or cash to your child’s teacher with your child’s name. If adequate funds are not raised or donated, some events may have to be canceled.
Bus Field Trip
There will be a bus field trip around the springtime. Location to be determined. More details to follow.
Sail America Expo – Tuesday, May 13th @ 8:30am - 11:30am
Students will dress in period costume and share their knowledge of the Original Thirteen Colonies. Parents are invited to attend during the scheduled presentations. Many classes at Calahan attend and listen as the 5th graders try to persuade their audience members to “voyage” to their colonies.
Staff vs. 5th Grade Softball Game – Monday, June 2nd @ 8:30am
The students will challenge the staff in this annual event. Coach Rey and the teachers coordinate practices during school hours and arrange for all interested students to play.
Staff vs. 5th Grade Basketball – Tuesday, June 3rd @ 8:30am
The students will challenge the staff in this sporting event. Coach Rey and the teachers coordinate practices during school hours and arrange for all interested students to play.
Yearbook Signing, Luncheon, and Dance – Wednesday, June 4th @ 12:00 p.m. – 2:25 p.m.
Fifth grade students will participate in a yearbook signing celebration in the morning. Parent volunteers, cleared by the district, prepare and present a special celebratory luncheon, and a program of dancing with a DJ will be offered.
CSUN Pool Field Trip – Thursday, June 5th (Tentative)
While still in the process of being officially booked, we are hoping to reserve the Plaza Pool at CSUN. Students will have an opportunity to enjoy a day of fun, swim with their friends, and participate in water safety instruction.
Final Awards Assembly and Books & Beyond Gold Medal Assembly - Friday, June 6th
Students earning an award and/or Books and Beyond gold medal will receive their award/medal on Friday, June 6th. Invitations to be sent out with students
5th Grade Culmination – Monday, June 9th @ 8:30 a.m.
Families are invited to attend the ceremony located in our amphitheater. Students should arrive at school for the culmination ceremony at 8:00 a.m. The day of the culmination ceremony is a minimum school day. Students who leave with parents after the ceremony need to sign the attached release slip. Historically, all students leave campus to celebrate their culmination with their families and/or friends. Once a student leaves the grounds he/she may not return later that same day. No balloons, air horns, or noisemakers will be allowed to enter school grounds on the day or culmination.
Culmination Dress:
Appropriate dress for students: a dress shirt (with tie, if desired) and slacks; a party-type dress with dress shoes.
NOT Appropriate: Tuxedos, halter tops, mini skirts, bare midriffs or backs, strapless dresses, spaghetti straps (unless worn with a sweater or jacket), T-shirts with writing and/or pictures, high heels (more than two inches), visible undergarments, and baggy pants are NOT appropriate for this occasion.
Video recording of the program may be done from the REAR of the amphitheater.
Aisles and the front must be kept clear for safety and convenience.
Last Day of School – Tuesday, June 10th
If your child would like to return to Calahan on the day after culmination, they may relax and enjoy the last day with their friends while watching movies and/or playing games.
Yearbook & Class of 2025 T-Shirt
With your donation, your child will receive a Calahan yearbook. The yearbook will include a picture of all 5th grade students around the apparatus. The date of the apparatus picture is yet to be determined. Please ensure your child is at school, as there will be no make-ups of the apparatus picture. Students will also receive a 2025 commemorative t-shirt with every student name on the back.
Your $60 donation covers:
- A 2024/2025 School Yearbook - $15
- A 2024/2025 Class T-shirt with Each Student’s Name - $10
- CSUN Plaza Pool Facility & Lifeguards - $10
- Snacks at the CSUN Plaza Pool - $5
- 5th Grade Luncheon, Dance, Decor - $10
- 5th Grade Class Gift to Calahan (Examples - Trees, Benches, Equipment, Plaque, etc.)
Student involvement in end-of-the-year activities is a privilege. Violations of the school code of conduct may exclude a child from these activities. If a child violates the school code of conduct, the parent will be notified and the student may be excluded from one or more of the 5th grade activities.
Families will be responsible for payment for lost or damaged books and equipment. All obligations must be met before a report card or certificate will be issued. Students who owe school library books must be cleared in order to register and receive 6th grade books.
